Save the libraries, MJ

Michael Jordan talked a lot Thursday about how he would be the face of the Charlotte Bobcats' franchise, and that part of his focus would be working with city and community groups to help Charlotte be a better place to live.

As several of my colleagues have pointed out to me today, there could hardly be a better place to start than Charlotte's public library system. It is in dire straits, as this Observer story details -- 12 of the 24 branches are set to close.

With those 12 closings will come 148 layoffs. And pretty much everyone gets affected by this, as the branches that will close April 3 are all over the county.

So help save the libraries, Michael. It's a very good cause, and talk about some serious bang for the civic buck -- this would do it. If I were Jordan, I'd get out in front of this issue quickly. (And I don't mean he should write a check for the entire amount himself. I mean he should make sure the Bobcats organization makes a sizeable contribution. He should encourage some of the players to do the same. He should possibly do a public-service announcement for the library system. He should help raise awareness of a serious issue, in other words, by using his celebrity).

And for those Charlotte residents who haven't seen the list of libraries that will be closing yet, they are: the urban branches of Beatties Ford Road, Belmont, Scaleybark and South Tryon; Sugar Creek to the north and Independence to the east; Myers Park, Carmel and Morrison on the affluent southside; and suburban outlets in Cornelius, Hickory Grove and Mint Hill.

What? MJ is just the owner of a NBA basketball team, not the be-all end-all savior of all things screwed up. He just spent over 200 mil for a sports team, why would he want or be expected to cough up more money to bail out the county government for their short-sighted mis-management of funds. Let's build a trolley to nowhere and a whitewater center that nobody uses and expect an athelete/team owner to cover our a$$? Right.

@Anonymous- I think of Scott's blog entry as more about the comparison of priorities, versus a literal plea to MJ to save the CMPL libraries. I, too, think it ironic that a fraction of the money that it takes to save a basketball team (that, from what I understand, has also been mis-managed, no?) would save a library system that benefits far more people than a basketball team. Moreover with this symbolism, is the larger issue that public institutions- from parks to public transportation to fire houses to the police -are increasinly under fire, not because they are 'short-sighted or mis-managed', but because they are public and not-for-profit, period. Accessible to all regardless of income, yet not quite as sexy as saving as a basketball team.

That is an EXCELLENT idea. If MJ or any of his advisors are reading this, it is exactly what he should do to put his money where his mouth is in supporting Charlotte.

Anonymous said...

Soon it will not matter.

The Bobcats will be part of the peoples collective of sports gifted individuals and will be exempt from rationed orthopedic medical attention.

Libraries on the other hand will be as prolific as Taco Bells, as each will be mandated to carrying one book only.

"How I did it"
By B. H. Obama

Scott is literally asking Jordan for some library bucks and so will I.

Cough up some cha ching Mr. Jordan. Bring some coin and awareness to the issue.

Anonymous said...

At most, you should be asking him for a challenge gift.

20,000 people giving $100 each could stop these closures. I am quite certain there are at least 20,000 individuals in Charlotte who could cough up $100. I am one.

But even that isn't the point. The point is mismanagement. That needs to be explored, indeed laid bare, before we agree to charity (to keep our libraries open, how embarrassing) or tax increases.

Kenneth said...

Scott,

I just don't know what is wrong with you. While I agree that the libraries need to be saved. Who are you to ask this man to pay for it? I think you want him to spend all his money. Everything you want him to do from buying a house, changing the team's name, and now this involves Jordan spending his own money? Jerry Richardson just raised ticket prices at the stadium. Why didn't you call him out like that about the libraries?

chris_p said...

What a joke. You want MJ to save the libraries? How come no one is asking the Wachovia or Bank of America CEO's to pony up some of that bonus money they got to save the libraries! No, they wanna harass MJ after he spent the majority of his own money to buy controlling interest in the Bobcats. I say let some of these high paid execs fork over some of their own cash. We all know they got it!

Anonymous 6:56 PM:
I agree, MJ just bought a team, he ain't the the savior. It would be a nice gesture but it's certainly not expected.

Anonymous said...

I can't believe this joker still has a job writing for this paper.

Anonymous said...

Basketball players and books don't get along too well.

Anonymous said...

This is unbelievable. Should we ask him to pay additional taxes too? Why don't you write an article about how JOrdan should build more homeless shelters, pay for additional schools, and wow, he could certainly pay more taxes to help fix our roads! Great idea Scott!

Anonymous said...

I agree with Scott, it would help bind the team to the citizens. Perhaps a small portion of ticket sales would help.

Anonymous said...

Do it, MJ, and then name a branch after yourself. What a great way to make reading a little cooler for every kid in Charlotte!

Anonymous said...

It would certainly be a nice gesture, but it is by no means necessary. I don't think that Scott is an "idiot," as some individuals have claimed. I do, however, think that the public request may have been in poor taste. Mr. Jordan has already invested a large sum of his personal wealth in purchasing the Bobcats, and millions more will follow most likely. Now that a request has been made public via the Observer, I worry about Mr. Jordan being painted as "the bad guy" if he chooses not to donate the money for the libraries. An important thing to note: while the community would undoubtedly appreciate such a gift, I somehow doubt that would translate into increased ticket sales.

Anonymous said...

This entry is nothing short of embarrassing. Scott - does the editor ever read the garbage you put out? If so, you should both lose your jobs.

Anonymous said...

I don't think it could be done. Red light money was mostly going to the schools, right. Education lottery money boosts education, wrong, because state funding was cut and reallocated thinking the lottery would increase funding. So if MJ did cut a check you can bet that one way or another the money would end up going exactly where "Big Brother" or the government wants it to go.

John G. Hartness said...

Nothing wrong with the request or the idea. Sports teams are always touting the positive public impact of the franchise when they're coming hat in hand for public dollars to build their facilities, why not have a little give-back? Let's see a couple of the $330 million we gave to the Bobcats for the nice arena they play in. Money that neither MJ or his predecessor had to pay back or come up with. That's money that we gave to the teams, let the team give a fraction of that money back.

Anonymous said...

I thought the very same thing this morning when I saw the headlines right next to each other. One person spending $200+ million for a sport with overpaid athletes, overpriced tickets and over-hyped - right next to the libraries needing just 10% of that to be saved. It's about priorities people. What is the matter with our society that we are OK with that kind of money being spent on entertainment when we are closing 50% off our libraries (and potentially all of them if the worst-case scenario comes to pass and all but Main close) and laying off nearly 1,000 teachers - just in CMS alone? This is the future of our country and we are flushing it away.

We spend more in NC per prison inmate than we do per pupil. It's time for us to get our priorities straight and what better gesture than this to make us realize that.

I just don't get the Charlotte Observer. They have folks that just spew puke on paper (in this case on the web) and get away with it. I see now that if my job goes away, I can find a job at the observer.

Anonymous said...

Dang, what is your problem! I know you already dropped some cash to save them, along with Jerry Richardson, Humpy Wheeler, Rick Hendrick and everybody else with a hold on some sort of athletic franchise! I really believe that you have some issues. You need to pull back, you are becoming ridiculous at this point!

Anonymous said...

while it may help his perception in the city I fail to see where MJ needs to be called out by someone in the local paper to bail out the city government that isn't able to balance a budget. It wasn't his fault this happened. What he should focus on is putting a quality product on the court and entice people to spend money at the arena and establishments around it. That will be his part in helping Charlotte, not bailing out a fiscal failure.

Anonymous said...

This is a very slippery slope... While, I agree it would be a nice gesture if MJ donated some money to help out the library system, then would he be expected to help out every time Charlotte has some kind of economical problem (big or small)? While I don't think just dropping 2M is the answer, maybe offering to match X amount if others step up. Like some suggested, all those rich bankers for one.

Anonymous said...

as hard as it is to believe maybe there was too many libraries.

Anonymous said...

Scott,

It's real easy for you to ask someone in Jordan's position to just cough up money to bailout a government entity, because the government couldn't manage itself properly. Should we expect him to shell out millions of dollars next year as well, when the economy is still in the tank thanks to tax increases and government excess?

If you want to bring the library situation into this sports blog, why don't you show a little outrage at the idiots in government who got the citizens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County into this situation?

Polly said...

Scott, Why don't YOU save just one library? Then 11 more CO employees could save one each. Problem solved.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Julius Peppers will save the libraries....oh wait...

Anonymous said...

Save the libraries? Who in the hell goes to a library any more? Libraries will be the first to go and then newspapers next.... Scott... you are about as dumb as you look...

Just Bill said...

Scott, I had the same thought. And yes, the banks should practice some corporate citizenship with their bonus money. Didn't B of A just pay out $4 billion? Also, didn't the County help the NASCAR Hall of Fame with construction cost overruns? Well, Bruton Smith's a squilliomaire, and Lord knows his public image could use some renovation. This can be a chance for people and organizations to step up and help. That said, I should make a donation myself. Keep the faith, Scott, and find a kid to read to.

We need to save the libraries, and the schools. We need to do it by raising taxes. For more than a hundred years Americans have supported public schools and libraries, and we should not shy away from that duty now.
And yes, I pay property taxes.

I still think this whole library closing drama is just kabuki.

Leave MJ alone. Let him get his business, the Charlotte Whomevers off the ground before you start hitting him up for charitable contributions. Right now, the Charlotte Whomevers is all any sane person can manage.

The city decides to go after light rail, trolley system, fund NASCAR museum, etc. etc. etc... lets not ask them...lets ask the rich... THE TWO MILLION DOLLARS WOULD BE A TEMPORARY FIX. THE LIBRARY WILL NEED 17 MILLION FOR THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR STARTING JULY 2010. The comparison of priorities is on target but the community is missing the point that a steady flow of monetary donations - year after year - will always be required - not just at the last hour before execution.

I can believe he is posting this, what happened to the other writer who got laid off from the Observer? As for Wachovia CEO, well their isn't one anymore as the CEO is headquartered in San Francisco, Ca so lay off that. If you are going to write about sports and civic duty then tell Jerry Richardson to cough up some $$ since he is willing to pay an over the hill Delhomme $12mil and then raise ticket prices after cutting the expenses, what a joke. Also, Scott how much is your or even the Observer is donating to the "Save the libraries foundation"? None of the wealthy is stepping up because they know there are other ways of saving them, like getting competent people in office who isn't so closed minded that they are willing to change their antiquated thinking and bring in some young fresh minds. Asking him to cough up something he had absolutely nothing to do with is plain stupid, no wonder the Observer is laying off also.

Hey theres plenty of books stores out there.

Jeditigger,

I appreciate your comments but being a fiscal conservative (I'm not a Bush disciple or republican cronie either) but if you look at the county/city budget and the projects it has undertaken, it has been very LIBERAL with the tax dollars of its citizens. In my household, we DONT SPEND WHAT WE DONT HAVE!!! This attitude that we hold individuals who are wealthy responsible and not the so-called stewards of the city/county political system is appalling. Those clowns work for us..Scott and the Observer continues to give these financial liberals a past. This is no more about Bush than it is about Obama. I am speaking on the local level. You ask the county and the first thing they point to is the state, ask the state they blame federal cuts... this problem speaks to of a mindset. Everybody's solution is simple: increase taxes...how about we just all work and get paid directly by the government and allow the government to determine our wages.....wait in some cases they already do...DEAR LIBERALS! WAKE UP.

Did anyone actually read what Scott wrote? Yes, he insinuated that MJ should stroke a check, but mostly he said MJ should use his celebrity to raise awareness of the issue - Using his celebrity as a means to get the community involved in supporting something that thousands of people use everyday. One of the branches being closed (Carmel?) had over 400,000 visitors in one year. If you think no one uses the library, that's what the internet is for, 1 - try reading a book sometime, you might learn something and 2 - I take it you are not one of the 12.8% of MC resident's who are currently unemployed and possibly can not afford the internet... The library provides free internet access to these poor folks to get look for jobs and get back on their feet.

Does the NBA & libraries go hand & hand?I'm not the one to answer that! But what Scott is saying it would be a good start for Jordan to help out in any manner to save the libraries.Since a lot of people say the players are thugs & if it wasn't for b-ball they wouldn't make it outside of the NBA.This would show good character by the Bobcats to step up!

With Jordan betting such a huge percentage of his own money on the Bobcats, I'm not looking to him. I'm not looking to the Levines, who have covered the shortfall of housing the homeless the past 2 winters.

I want to see these out-of-towners Brian Moynihan and John Stumpf, who both claim to have big plans for their banks in Charlotte, to step up. They could each throw $10 million to stop the closures and the threat of next year's closures, and never miss it.

I think you underestimate the effect the basketball team has on the local economy. This team adds a ton of tax revenue to the local government which in turn filters down to the local parks, libraries, etc. To claim the money would be better spent on the library system (which would go directly towards costs and would have little chance of return of investment, perpetual returns, etc.) is completely inaccurate. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that tax revenue gained from the team's presence uptown over the next 10 years (including businesses around the arena that previously did not exist) will eclipse any one-time payment made.

On a different note, while I agree the libraries need to be saved, I think it's important to point out the declining significance libraries have in our society today. With prevalent high-speed access the library is a slowly dying institution. I personally enjoy the library and recognize the access it allows people of all income levels, but I also think the downsizing was a long time coming and may continue, especially with the new push to provide high-speed internet to everyone across the country.

Jordan odds of making it as an NBA owner borrowing and laying 275 mill on the line with interest are slim to none. The bad economy only compounds things and BJ showing his sour grapes was bad for business too.

What was BJ thinking? Was he trying to hurt MJ out his way out urinating on the city? Clearly being so negative toward a city who gave him a 400 mill new arena as the first minority owner was arrogant much less calling the QC pretty much white inbred trash. Is he kidding? BJ was raised in rural Mississippi and didnt have a pot to pizz in before moving to DC and getting a free lunch grant.

BJ must be mad he couldnt run another scam like he did with BET selling out to the white man at VIA for 1.5 bill in stock after 8 yrs. Losing on the NBA was his fault not the city. Idiot.

This is what Bob Johnson was talking about. Prove yourself over and over by giving away money or either do what a few writers who have control of the news say or they will lable you anti-Charlotte. What a blackmailing type idea!

Bob Johnson has proven himself a complete racist bigoted jackazz lying piece of arrogant trash and it finally came out what a scam artist he was in this city after being handed everything on a silver platter and failing like the loser he is.

Is Mississippi po' boy Johnson, who would still be picking cotten for a dollar a day had he not got a free lunch in DC, sure he is not a product of inbreeding?
