Here's a smattering of stats involving the Carolina Panthers after the Week 1 games have concluded (and here's my link to today's column, comparing the Panthers' Week 1 performance to the bad old days of 2010 under Jimmy Clausen):
-- OFFENSE. A mostly sad story. The Panthers are dead last in the NFL in rushing yardage (10 per game) after finishing third in the same category a year ago. They are tied for last with Miami in points per game (also 10 per game).
Cam Newton is 20th in passing efficiency (83.3), dragged down by his two interceptions Sunday despite his 303 passing yards (tied for eighth). Washington's Robert Griffin III is a a surprising first -- he had a debut that was pretty close to perfect. Former N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson, a rookie who like Griffin started his first NFL game but lost, is 27th.
-- DEFENSE. Carolina is surprisingly good -- tied for fifth with Oakland -- in yards allowed per game (258). The Panthers did not generate any turnovers, however. This week's opponent, New Orleans, gave up more yards than anyone in the NFL last week. They allowed 464 in a 40-32 loss to Washington.

I fear the main problem was coaching on Sunday. No way in the world we rush that little.
Rushing is pointless if you can't get out and block. If the rush doesn't work, they need to torch the defense over the middle on intermediate routes. That'll force the LBs to drop into coverage and open up rushing lanes.
You honestly can't have one without the other.

Steve Smith said the Panthers didn't match TB's intensity. That's what it looked like. RG III looks like the real deal, but he is not sturdily built. Won't last.
Russell Wilson had two td's dropped that should have been caught.
The Superman routine should be stopped. I'd like to see a Panther score, put the ball down and sprint back to the bench. ... hey a score alone will suffice.
I must disagree with your point that we abandoned the run too early. We had produced 10 whole yards. Why should we keep doing something that wasn't even close to working? There were also some dropped balls and a couple bad decisions by Cam that should be fixable.
I have been asking for a year now, and will continue to ask, why does everyone think Byron Bell is so good? He is hot garbage, the worst RT in the NFL by a long shot. Yes, including Wayne Hunter. He's a bum, and has been from day one last year. I have never understood the love for him. The rookie at LG got torched too, but that was to be expected from a guy whose last game was at the Division II college level.
In spite of all this, we'll be fine. Every team loses a game they have no business losing (see Minnesota at Carolina, 2011). New Orleans is a mess on D and while the game was still undecided, they scored only 17 on a so-so Redskins defense. I still think we can blow them out.
And more needs to be said about the fact that Thomas Davis was the best player in the stadium, with the possible exception of Ronde Barber. He is all the way back from the 3 ACL tears, and if he plays like this he'll easily be Comeback Player of the Year.
Bryon bell was actually solid my friend the guards and center was the ones that got whooped. This game falls on the coaches shoulders. They played uninspired and they were under prepared also which is sad considering this was a division rival....
It took one off season for opponents to figure out how to stop Cam & co.
